54.8mm Basket Design: Flow and Balance
If you have ever closely observed the bottom of a basket during espresso extraction, you may have noticed how much the flow changes from the beginning to the middle and toward the end of the shot. Depending on the setup, the center may activate first, the edges may open later, or certain zones may momentarily dominate. What appears as a single extraction from the outside is, in reality, a complex and dynamic flow system inside the basket.
Ultimately, we choose a basket to express the kind of coffee we prefer. Some pursue greater body and density; others look for clarity, brightness, or a cleaner finish. The basket’s structure, open area, and capacity directly influence these characteristics.
At the same time, there is another perspective. A basket is not only a tool for shaping flavor but also a structure intended to extract as evenly as possible from all areas of the coffee bed. If certain zones are over-extracted while others remain underutilized, the result is not only a matter of taste preference but also of extraction balance and efficiency.
This question became the starting point of the 54.8mm basket design:
How can we create more balanced conditions across the entire coffee bed?

Uniform Does Not Mean Equal
Many baskets use evenly spaced hole patterns. However, identical spacing does not necessarily create uniform extraction. Pressure seeks the path of least resistance, and in symmetrical geometries, it often concentrates toward the central axis. At the same time, wall friction, density variation, and tamping differences influence peripheral flow.
In other words, the center and the edges do not operate under identical conditions. A perfectly uniform pattern may actually amplify imbalance.
The goal is not symmetry of pattern, but symmetry of condition.
The 54.8mm Orbit basket uses a concentric radial ring structure. The central region carries slightly higher hole density to help distribute localized pressure concentration, while spacing gradually adjusts toward the outer rings to maintain activation near the walls. This structure does not rely solely on assumptions of either center-biased or edge-biased flow. It reflects a balance of multiple tendencies observed during testing. The adjustment is subtle, but it is intentional.
721 Controlled Openings
This basket contains 721 precision 0.3mm through-holes. The perforation count was increased as far as manufacturing tolerance and structural integrity responsibly allow. The purpose was not simply to increase hole count, but to refine pressure distribution.
Hole diameter, hole count, radial spacing, and overall open area ratio function together as a hydrodynamic system. Increasing perforation can improve distribution but may reduce rigidity. Reducing perforation increases resistance but may concentrate flow. The balance between these variables defines how pressure forms and behaves during extraction.

After extensive testing across different basket sizes, I found that the flavor density and tactile response I personally prefer are best expressed below the 58mm format — particularly at or below 54.8mm. A 58mm basket certainly has strengths, but it changes system behavior. Grind settings typically move finer to achieve comparable resistance, and as diameter increases, the overall machine architecture inevitably grows.
Portability matters to me. Mechanical density matters to me. The lever response — how pressure builds and releases — matters deeply. 54.8mm became the point where extraction character, grind behavior, lever feedback, and structural proportion felt properly balanced.
Importantly, 54.8mm aligns with the IMS B66 standard. Within this format, users can choose from smaller single-shot baskets to larger triple-shot options.
Coffee baskets play a major role in shaping extraction characteristics and flavor direction. Open area, hole pattern, and capacity influence density, flow response, and texture expression, and this is an area where personal preference clearly exists. While Orbit was engineered around 54.8mm, compatible B66 filters can be used if a different basket style is preferred.
